No Justification

Lost spoilers for The Other 48 Days. I wasn’t overly impressed.

So I’m supposed to believe that Ana Luca is that bitchy simply because she made a promise to a little girl that she couldn’t keep? I’m sorry, but I just don’t see the justification for why she acts the way she does. I was hoping that this episode would help shed some light on her attitude, but it really didn’t. I don’t understand how she became the leader of their little group in the first place. Was Goodwin’s implication that she was not a good person either? I’m assuming she wasn’t on the list or she would have been taken as well.

I understand that the writers were trying to pack 48 days of backstory for the tail section survivors into under an hour of television, but I thought it could have been better. Most of what we saw we already knew. A few exceptions I can think of:

  1. Ana Lucia used her pit to torture Nathan (Josh Randall, formerly of Ed, which rocked) who had done nothing wrong.
  2. Goodwin was not a good person who was lost like she had implied (or like I had assumed). He killed Nathan among other things. It was hard to tell if the Eko, Bernard, Libby, and Cindy actually knew he was one of “them” or if they simply thought he was taken.
  3. Eko (that’s the spelling according to abc.com) didn’t speak for 40 days after the crash.
  4. “The others” are smart enough to create a list of people they want to take (most likely with Goodwin’s help), including each persons name and other information.

What I really don’t understand is why Ana Lucia kept asking “Remember what happened to Goodwin?” Well, nothing really happened to him, he just turned out to be one of “them.” I guess I’m just a little disappointed because I was hoping for more character interaction, and for someone besides Nathan to stand up to her and ask her why they were all just supposed to do exactly what she says.

It was interesting to see the strong contrast between the two groups of survivors. The “main” group had a stressful start, but for the most part they have mellowed out. They’ve now found the hatch, and have things pretty well established. Those from the tail section have had it pretty rough from the start. Whereas the main group seemed to band together and help each other create their new life, Ana Lucia’s group was pretty disjointed and never really got unified. I think part of this is due to the fact that the main group wound up with a lot more stuff from the plane (hence more supplies). The main group also didn’t choose to start wandering through the jungle trying to avoid “them.”

The episode was entertaining, but not one of the stronger ones this season. From the preview for next week, it appears Ana Lucia won’t get any less bitchy. Did she actually fire a second shot from her gun? I thought it only had one bullet left. And is she really gonna go after Sayid? Give me a break; someone needs to put her in her place. The good news is, all stories are back on the same timeline and in the same (general) location once again.
