Honeymoon Plans

I finally managed to call a travel agent to try and solidify our Honeymoon plans, and I think it was an excellent idea. I went to Sandals.com and picked out an agent between here and Milwaukee and I think I got incredibly lucky. When we were planning our family vacation to Hawaii my mom called a travel agent but couldn’t seem to find a better deal than what we were seeing online. I think this time is going to be different though.

This particular agent has been to Jamaica over 100 times and has been to all of the Sandals resorts. So even if we decided not to book through her, I can pick her brain and ask all kinds of questions that I can’t really get from reading a review or looking at pictures. She also recommended Couples as an equally good option. So I’m off to check more stuff on the web and wait for her call to tell me what she found on pricing.

Design

It’s official. I’ve finally started working on a new site design. I’m trying to do things right using CSS for a standards based layout. I’m saying goodbye to tables, so this is a new experience for me. I’ve used CSS quite a bit before, but never without tables to structure the site. No promises on when this thing will be done. It’ll probably be a work in progress for a long time, especially since I hope to do this all on my own. If I want something like rounded corners that will require custom images, I’ll have to create them all on my own.

There’s several things I really want to be able to do with my site. I’m hoping I can add a photo gallery of some kind, because I have a pretty decent digital camera and haven’t really shown off many of my pictures. I really want to create a layout that will allow me to easily change the theme to coincide with the current season or whatever holiday is coming up, hopefully with some kind of artistic image highlighted at the top of the page (similar to HumanRadiator.com). I’m also trying to be less dependent on Blogger for everything except some of my content (and I hope to phase that out at some point as well). Still considering a change in domain name, but I’ve got this one for another five months, so it won’t be happening right away.

Mild Weather = Awesome

Not only is it nice outside, our A/C hasn’t been on almost all month. Our electric bill went from $85 to $25! Sweetness. Now if we can just hold off on the heat a little longer…

Currently Watching: Prison Break (it’s surprisingly good)

HDTV

Two reasons I’ve avoided this. One, there aren’t enough HD channels in this area to be worth it. Two, it’s confusing. There are so many different options and resolutions that I just figured I’d wait for it to be more prevalent before I looked into it. Well, I’ve slowly been gathering knowledge from various online articles and I have to admit my interest is piqued. HD TVs don’t have to be thousands of dollars anymore if you don’t need the biggest LCD or Plasma screen and HD service from Charter is almost reasonably priced. Plus, watching football on Chris’s HD set looks really sweet…

Articles like this help make things less confusing. Now I just have to decide how long I can wait before I switch to HD.

More Super Mario World

I still remember Christmas in 1991 when my dad bit the bullet and spent $200 for a brand new Super Nintendo Entertainment System (just before the price dropped $20 at Toys R Us). The NES before it had been for him, but this baby was all for me. Super Mario World was the game that launched the system and I spent forever playing through it, discovering all of its secrets. I still remember the first time I beat it. Some of my cousins were staying over and we stayed up half the night playing through the last levels.

On more than one occasion I’ve sought a SNES emulator and a ROM to play this game again (my SNES is 10 hours away at my parents house). Now someone has made it possible to play brand new levels!

Lunar Magic is a level editor I created for Super Mario World (SNES). It’s the first and, as far as I know, the only level editor available for this game. I began looking into making an editor for it shortly after releasing the SoM VWF patch, mostly on a whim to see how hard it would be.

So yeah, ROMs aren’t technically legal. Did I say I’ve had them before? I was only kidding. Although, I do actually own the game. Doesn’t that make it slightly less illegal? Hey, look over there! *Downloads ROM for the nth time*

Characters

Warning – Lost Spoilers ahead.

I go bowling on Wednesday nights, so I don’t get to see the show until after 9 o’clock when I get home. I walked in tonight and asked Amber how the episode was and she said something like, “It was Ok, not much really happened. It wasn’t one of the better ones.”

I can see why people would say nothing happened or that it was a filler episode, but I have to disagree with that assessment. I think episodes like tonight’s are what I’ve been missing in the second season up until now. We’ve had character flashbacks and learned new things about them, but tonight we finally got back to their lives on the island and the little things that get them through each day. It’s those simple tasks and interactions that can give the show so much depth. We got to see a majority of the characters in some capacity except for Charlie, Sayid, and Shannon. But while they’re introducing new characters from the tail section, it makes sense a few others would have a little less screen time.

Character development – It’s seems very much like Jack to have bought a replacement for his wedding ring when he lost it, and he spoke pretty fondly of being married which really makes me wonder what happened to Sarah. We already knew Kate was sentimental (the toy plane), but here we see she her sadness that she never said goodbye to Sawyer and he may be gone (when she seemingly hates him). Interesting that she can’t seem to make up her mind about Sawyer and/or Jack (wasn’t she just flirting with Jack last week?). There also seems to be a tiny crack in Ana Lucia’s shell, as she finally cut her attitude toward Sawyer (a little). Sun and Jin’s backstory wasn’t that surprising but it was well written. I love that a girl in an orange dress made Jin do a double take, thus running right into Sun as he turned back. Locke’s statement about the best way to find something lost…so true. This episode was full of character development without much action, but I think any successful drama has to have both elements and it’s difficult to do them well at the same time.

There was one arguably significant thing, and I’m sure people will try to dissect absolutely everything they saw. Here’s my take: it was a little difficult to tell with the different camera angles, but I played it through a couple of times on my DVR and counted 11 or 12 others walk by Jin and Acko in the jungle. It would appear that at least one of them is young or joined them at an age where a teddy bear attachment hasn’t faded. I don’t think this would be Walt though. I don’t remember him having a bear like that on the island (could it be Alex?). It would appear that they have at least some normal clothing as the ones wearing pants didn’t exactly look island made. I wonder if they found them in the luggage from the plane or had them already. Again, it’s hard to tell but I would guess those legs belonged to both men and women.

It’s going to be a long three week break. From the preview for the next episode, it would appear the action hungry viewers will get what they’re craving. I’ve read that (highlight to view) a female character will bite the dust shortly. My guess: Shannon.

Oh, and the Astros just won the NLCS. I was hoping for a AA World Series (Astros/Angels), but I’ll live since St. Louis lost and I won’t have to hear anymore about Albert Pujols for a while.
