Guitar Zero

I found a guy at work willing to let me borrow his PS2, Guitar Hero, and Guitar Hero II (I know, I was surprised, too) and that pretty much sums up my performance so far. I made it through about the first dozen tracks on Medium without too much trouble. Then I hit Stellar by Incubus. I really love the song, but man is it ever kicking my ass. I dropped down to Easy and had no trouble, but I’ve only been able to finish it once on Medium and I was dangerously close to losing it. Typing feels so awkward right now…

Anyway, I’ve got the games for probably about a week and a half. I figured it would be a good way to tide myself over until Guitar Hero III comes out for Wii later this year. These are the first games I’ve really played since I spent basically half of the month of May in Seattle. I’ve been neglecting the Wii which is pretty sad considering I still haven’t finished Red Steel or Super Paper Mario. I’m sure I’ll pick one of them up again after I have to give back the guitar.

Lights and Sounds

I just downloaded Yellowcard’s new album from iTunes and took my first listen at work. They really sound like Weezer on a couple of tracks. For a first listen I’d give it a solid B, but I’m expecting that to go up significantly when I get a chance to listen without pretending to focus on work. No tracks jumped out at me immediately as the best, but I was a little distracted.

Trade in Your CDs for an iPod

An independent music store in Charleston, SC is allowing customers to trade in their old CDs for an iPod. How sweet a deal is this? What’s to stop the customer from ripping all their CDs into iTunes and then trading in for a new iPod?

Millennium’s CD to iPod converstion table:
45 CDs = 512MB iPod shuffle
65 CDs = 1GB iPod shuffle
85 CDs = 2GB iPod nano
110 CDs = 4GB iPod nano
130 CDs = 30GB video iPod
175 CDs = 60GB video iPod

I’m pretty sure I could get at least a 4GB nano if not a 30 GB video or more. Too bad I’m a little far from Charleston. Maybe Amber should tell her brother about it…

Flipped

I almost forgot…when we got back into Madison on Monday night, we got in the car to go to dinner and I flipped to my favorite radio station, Mad Radio WMAD. I didn’t really pay much attention at first, but then I realized it was a country song. Now their slogan is “new rock, no rules” but that would be a bit of a stretch. When the song ended they announced that it was the New Star Country.

!@#$%^!@#

Not only did they flip the station to country, they killed the station completely along with the morning show they carried (at least killed it for Madison). It was the only station I could really listen to for more than 5 or 10 minutes before I wanted to flip and it’s the only station that played a decent mix of Alternative. It was one of the only stations that played almost entirely new music. Madison radio has sucked since we got here, but this is just one more reason for me to consider XM or Sirius.

Something Sad

So I’m sitting at work listening to my iPod when a Something Corporate song comes on. I started wondering if they had a new album coming out anytime soon, so I went to their official site only to find out that their lead singer was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia back in June. That really sucks, but they say he is expected to make a full recovery. I also found out he’s the lead singer for another band called Jack’s Mannequin that released a new album in
August. I’m gonna have to check it out while I wait for his recovery so he can go back to making awesome music.

Pandora

I just saw this on Digg and it’s gotta be the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. You put in an artist or song that you like and it analzyes the style of the music and makes suggestions of other songs and artists you might like. I’ve been using it for the past 15 minutes or so and it’s spit out some really good stuff. It’s free if you can live with some ads, or you can subscribe if you’d like. It works right from your browser, and it’s got a pretty slick Flash interface. I can see myself spending a lot of time here… Discover Music – Pandora

Yellowcard Happenings

I heard on the radio that Yellowcard guitarist Ben Harper is leaving the band to focus on his record label (the one that did Yellowcard’s first few albums). Hopefully it won’t hurt them much. Their new album is coming out soon and supposedly it’s got a heavier sound. More information at their official site. I’m looking forward to the new album either way. I hope they come to the Madison area sometime soon.

Update: I just had a chance to watch the music video for their new single Lights & Sounds. Pretty good stuff.

Relient K

My hearing still isn’t back to normal. Who says Christians can’t rock? The concert was pretty good, although things are always better when you know music from more than one band.

The openers weren’t that great (surprise). The lead singer had the stupidest hair. It totally covered his eyes the whole time they were on stage. I couldn’t understand more than 3 words. Still, not horrible for an opening band.

Then there was Mae. I think I would like these guys. If I could hear the words. That’s one thing I’ll never understand; bands never set their vocals at a high enough volume to hear them at concerts. I might have to see if I can find their CD when it comes out.

Relient K opened with Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been. That’s right, I called it. They played a pretty good mix of new and old with some fun stuff mixed in. They were onstage at least an hour and came back for an encore of my favorite song (I So Hate Consequences). BUT–they didn’t finish it! The best part of the song and they cut it short. That’s my only complaint. It didn’t make any sense to me, kind of the same way it didn’t make any sense to me that security wasted about 100 bottles of water by squirting them into the crowd rather than handing them out to people so we could drink them. Go figure.
